- Lions' Commentary on UNIX with Source Code
by John Lions (probably the most photocopied computer science book of all time).
See below for an adequate online equivalent.
-
Classic Shell Scripting: Hidden Commands that Unlock the Power of Unix.
This is an excellent tutorial and reference for use of the shell, and shell
scripting (programming).
-
Using csh & tcsh: Work Faster, Type Less.
This is another good book - this time about the C shell, and its development, tcsh.
This shell makes you even more productive at the command line!
- Operating Systems Design and Implementation
by Andrew Tanenbaum (the latest edition of his book about the Minix system).
-
The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System - Third Edition
by Marshall Kirk McKusick et al. (the definitive book on the inner workings of FreeBSD).
-
In the Beginning...Was the Command Line
by Neal Stephenson (a thoughtful, irreverent, hilarious treatise on the cyber-culture past and present; on operating system tyrannies and downloaded popular revolutions; on the Internet, Disney World, Big Bangs, not to mention the meaning of life itself).
See below for a download link.
Not strictly UNIX, but a good read, covering UNIX
and the whole free software concept as well as ranting at Microsoft.
Other documents
Here are some additional documents for download. In some cases, these are PDFs
of books that are either out of print, or where the author has agreed to provide
a free download.
